Ocean Plastic Dimout Screens

High-performance solar control privacy blinds for ships, cruise liners, ferries and yachts – with the added benefit of sustainability

We care about the environment at Solarglide – there’s more about that later.

But first, let us tell you about our amazing, sustainable privacy dimout blinds. They’re made from recycled ocean plastics – the plastics washed up on our beaches and recovered from the sea. We save that plastic from up to 500 years in landfills and make incredible privacy blinds for use on ships, cruise liners, ferries, and yachts. Amazing, right?

Our privacy blinds are available in cassetted and non-cassetted dimout screens. They’re semi-transparent to provide privacy for passengers and crew while being moisture resistant, robust and reflective to keep glare at bay.

As Solarglide strives towards becoming net zero in the months ahead for all our internal processes, our ocean plastic blinds also help our customers to achieve their own environmental goals.

Using ocean plastic

When we learned we could use ocean plastics to make blinds, we jumped at the chance to divert at least some of the plastics recovered from our seas from landfill and turn it into something useful. In line with our sustainability values, each blind uses approximately 0.62kg of ocean plastic. Here’s a useful description of what that actually means:

Let’s look at the average cruise ship. With around 3,000 guests in 1,500 cabins (each with one window), that ship could have ocean plastic dimout screens fitted to every cabin window. That would equate to 0.62kg x 1,500 = 930kg of recovered sea plastic per cruise liner – impressive!

The screens are flame retardant (DIN 4102 B1; BS5867-2, Type B: 2008) and come in a choice of five neutral colours, perfect for any ship interior. The screens provide privacy while still allowing light into the room and are made of 50% ocean plastic and 50% polyester.

Solarglide and sustainability

We care deeply about the environment here at Solarglide. And with our ocean-going heritage, the world’s oceans and seas are of particular importance to us.

We’ve invested a great deal of time and money into energy-efficient heating in our warehouse and biodegradable packaging for our products. We also make sure our products can be recycled at the end of their lives.

And while a great deal of effort is made to be more sustainable in the maritime industry as a whole, there is still a long way to go. That’s why we’re so proud of our ocean plastics dimout blinds. Because with them, we save ocean plastics not only from the oceans but also from landfills. Some plastics can take up to 500 years to biodegrade and it has been estimated that by 2050 there could be more plastics in our oceans than fish.

We truly hope more members of the maritime industry will join us in our efforts to help the environment while making sea-going life more pleasant, private and comfortable.
